Description of the role:
Individuals working in this position will be interacting with multiple organizations to ensure implementation and compliance with Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations, Quality, and Safety Management Programs for their area.

Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

Assists in the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives.

Develops a technical approach, using judgment within defined practices and procedures, and makes technical decisions, including making preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives, for assigned work.

Assists in the development of new methods, techniques or approaches to address critical technical problems.

May assist in the development of technical products such as journal papers and reports.

Contributes to the completion of milestones associated with specific projects. May directly contribute to the achievement of programmatic objectives.

Takes responsibility for understanding tasks and own contributions to deliverables. Sets direction and goals for assigned tasks and manages his/her own assignments.

Gives presentations at discipline-specific meetings and colloquia. May participate in professional societies, National Nuclear Security Administration/Department of Energy complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external special interest groups.

Continues developing technical expertise and knowledge within the discipline, and develops new skills in related disciplines. May attain additional certifications and/or qualifications, including more advanced educational degrees.

Minimum qualifications:

Basic knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, testing, analyzing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.

Basic knowledge along with any class project experience with analysis or testing in one or more of the following engineering areas: shock, vibration, fluids, thermal, nuclear, systems, explosives, manufacturing, process, control systems, data acquisition and data analysis.

Basic knowledge of engineering design.

Demonstrated ability to express ideas clearly in oral and written communications.
Engineering Expertise

Beginner to intermediate knowledge of professional engineering concepts, principles, practices, and procedures, as demonstrated by experience researching, designing, analyzing, testing, verifying, and validating engineering solutions.

Demonstrated capability/experience performing a broad range of complex engineering work, including experience designing or reviewing a complete project, system, or component.

Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing, system and component testing operations.

Demonstrated experience developing, codifying, and validating engineering requirements.

Education/Experience
Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience. Candidates that meet the degree requirement, but do not meet the 2-year minimum experience requirement are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an exception process.
