I’m a junior in mechanical engineering with an interest in energy systems and sustainability. I’d love to gain experience doing real audits or working with facilities on efficiency projects.
I came across the DOE’s Industrial Assessment Centers and wanted to know:
- Do students get hands-on experience?
- Are there specific IACs that work with undergrads?
- Any tips for getting started or applying?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Asha - yes, students are heavily involved in ITACs (previously IACs) and participate in real industrial audits which includes onsite visits, taking measurements and drafting recommendations. All centers offer roles to undergraduates, graduates and doctoral students. Have you tried emailing the center coordinators yet? I’d be happy to help connect you with the ITAC.
Thanks. I’d love help reaching out to a center near me. Since I’m at Arizona State, do you know which ITAC serves this region or has a good student program? Also, are there application deadlines or can students join throughout the year?
